At Scarlet Hair, every colour journey is bespoke. Your hair has its own history, condition and personality, so your result should be tailored to you; not simply copied from a photo.

So, what actually happens during a consultation?

1. We talk about what you want

This is where you can show us your inspiration photos, talk through colours you've loved in the past or even say, “I don't really know, I just want my hair to feel better.”

There is no wrong answer.

Maybe you want to be brighter and blonder, add more dimension to your brunette, soften your regrowth or completely change things up.

Your stylist will ask questions to understand what you're hoping to achieve and what you love about your inspiration images.

2. We look at your hair history

This is one of the most important parts of a colour consultation.

Your stylist needs to know what your hair has been through even if it happened months or years ago.

Previous colour, box dye, lightening, toners, permanent colour, chemical treatments and even old colour that has grown out can all affect what is possible today.

This is why being honest about your hair history is so important. It isn't about judging what you've done at home, it's about giving your stylist the information they need to create the safest and most realistic plan.

3. We assess the condition of your hair

Two people can bring in the exact same inspiration photo and require completely different approaches.

Why?

Because their hair isn't the same.

Your stylist will look at the condition, strength, texture and overall integrity of your hair before recommending a colour or chemical service.

Sometimes your dream result can be achieved in one appointment. Sometimes it needs to happen gradually.

And sometimes, the best recommendation is to improve the condition of your hair first.

4. We talk about maintenance

The perfect colour isn't just about how it looks when you leave the salon.

It's also about whether you're happy maintaining it.

We'll talk through how often you realistically want to visit the salon, how much maintenance you're comfortable with and what will work with your lifestyle.

5. We talk about your lifestyle

Your hair needs to work for your real life.

If you're constantly swimming, regularly using heat tools, travelling, wearing your hair up for work or simply don't have time for frequent salon visits, these things can influence the colour and services we recommend.

We want to create something that looks amazing in the salon but also makes sense for you once you leave.

6. We create a realistic plan

Sometimes the colour you want isn't possible in one appointment.

That doesn't necessarily mean you can't have it.

It might mean we need to approach it differently or gradually work towards it over several appointments.

Your stylist will explain what they recommend, what kind of result you can realistically expect and what may be involved in getting there.

We'd always rather give you an honest plan than promise a result that isn't achievable for your hair.

What if I don't know what I want?

That's exactly what your stylist is there for.

You don't need to know the difference between a balayage, babylights, a full head of foils or a global colour before you book.

You can simply tell us what you like - or what you don't like - and we'll help guide you.

Try bringing a few photos of hair you love, but don't worry about finding the perfect reference image. Your stylist will look at the common elements in your inspiration and help translate them into something that works for your hair.

Why your Pinterest photo is inspiration - not a blueprint

We love a good inspiration photo.

But it's important to remember that your result will never be an exact copy of someone else's hair.

Things like natural hair colour, previous colour, hair density, texture, condition, lighting and even the way a photo has been edited can all change how a colour appears.

Instead of trying to recreate a photo pixel-for-pixel, we'll look at what you love about it and create a version that is suited to you.
