Full Head Foils vs Half Head Foils: What Should I Book?

If you’re booking a blonde appointment and wondering whether you need a full head or half head of foils, you’re definitely not the only one.

The difference isn’t simply about how many foils you get. It comes down to how much of your hair you want to brighten, where you want the blonde to sit and how much change you’re looking for.

At Scarlet Hair, we’ll always look at your existing colour, regrowth, hair condition and your end goal before recommending the best option for you.

What is a half head of foils?

A half head of foils focuses on selected areas of the hair, usually through the top, sides and around the face.

It’s a great option if you’re already blonde and mainly want to maintain brightness where it’s most visible, without lightening the entire head.

A half head can be ideal for:

  • Maintaining an existing blonde

  • Brightening the top and front sections

  • Adding lighter pieces without a full transformation

  • Keeping appointments a little more manageable between full blonding services

  • Clients who like a softer, more lived-in blonde

If your underneath is already close to your desired colour, a half head may be all you need.

What is a full head of foils?

A full head of foils works throughout the hair, including areas that aren't as visible when your hair is worn down.

This gives you a more consistent overall blonde and is generally the better choice when you want to create a significant amount of brightness throughout your hair.

A full head can be ideal if you:

  • Want to become noticeably lighter overall

  • Have darker regrowth throughout the head

  • Want more blonde through the underneath sections

  • Haven't had your full head lightened for a while

  • Want a brighter, more even blonde from root to ends

If you’re trying to achieve a much lighter result, a half head may not provide enough coverage.

So, which one should you book?

The easiest way to think about it is:

Half head = maintaining and refreshing your existing blonde.

Full head = creating more overall brightness and blonde throughout.

However, it isn't always that straightforward.

Your previous colour work, natural hair colour, amount of regrowth, density and desired result can all change which service is most appropriate.

For example, someone with a naturally light base who only wants a few brighter pieces may not need the same service as someone with several centimetres of dark regrowth who wants to return to a bright blonde.

What if I’m not sure?

If you're unsure which service to book, don't stress.

This is exactly what your consultation is for.

Before we start, your stylist will assess your hair and talk through what you're hoping to achieve. From there, we can work out the best approach for your hair rather than simply choosing a service based on the name.

It's also important to remember that online booking prices are starting prices. Hair length, thickness, previous colour, product usage and the time required can all affect the final cost.

At Scarlet Hair, we use a dedicated product measurement system to keep track of colour and lightening product usage, so if your hair requires additional product, we'll discuss this with you.

Don't forget about your toner

Foils are only one part of creating your finished blonde.

Depending on your desired result, a toner may be recommended to refine the tone after lightening. Your stylist may also recommend treatments such as Metal Detox to help care for the hair during the lightening process.

The goal isn't simply to make your hair lighter. It's about creating the blonde you want while keeping your hair in the best possible condition.

How often should you have foils?

There isn't one perfect timeframe for everyone.

Some clients like to maintain their blonde regularly, while others prefer a softer, more grown-out look and stretch their appointments further apart.

Your natural colour, desired level of brightness and how quickly your hair grows will all play a part.

Your stylist can recommend a maintenance schedule that works for your hair and the look you're trying to achieve.

The bottom line

If you love your current blonde and just want to refresh the most visible areas, a half head of foils may be the right choice.

If you're wanting to create more overall brightness or haven't had your full head lightened for some time, a full head of foils may be more suitable.

And if you're still unsure, that's okay. We'd much rather you come in with a photo and a general idea of what you want than book the wrong service and hope for the best.

Your consultation is where we can look at your hair properly, talk through your goals and create a plan for the result you actually want.
