Keratin Bonds vs. Tape Extensions

If you’re wondering about the distinctions between keratin bonds and tape extensions, and which choice suits you best, here’s a brief guide comparing the two. This should assist you in determining the ideal option for your needs.

Keratin Bonds

Tape Weft Extensions

Each K-tip are individually attached to your natural hair using a keratin-based adhesive & gentle heat tool

Applied using the “sandwich” method with a thin slice of your hair in between 2 tape wefts

Typically lasting 4-6 months with proper care as the bond grow out with your natural hair

Requires maintenance every 4-8 weeks to have the tapes pushed up as the hair grows

You can wash & style them like your natural hair.

PRO TIP: don’t use products with a heavy keratin or protein base on the bonds themselves.

Heavy oils, heavy conditioners or excessive heat not to be used directly on the adhesive bonds as it can cause slipping

Long installation process, can take up to 2 + hours

Fast application typically 30-90minutes

Requires professional removal

Brands We Adore and Trust for Hair Extensions

Great Lengths Extensions

Great Lengths offers keratin-based bond extensions made from 100% ethically sourced human hair. These extensions provide natural volume and length, lasting between four to six months without damaging your hair.

Installation Process

At Scarlet Hair, we are dedicated to ensuring you receive exactly what you want, which is why our installation process begins during your consultation. Our stylists will discuss your hair goals, including color matching, extension cut, and styling techniques. By the end of your consultation, you should feel confident in your choice of Great Lengths. You will also receive a cost estimate, and a deposit will be taken to secure your appointment for a hair transformation!

On application day, the stylist will start by washing and blow-drying your hair to prepare it for the extension application. They will section your hair and place a small protective shield around a lock of your hair to safeguard your scalp. The pre-tipped keratin will be positioned near the root. Using a specialized thermal applicator, the stylist will gently warm and soften the bond before rolling it against your natural hair to create a seamless blend. This process will be repeated throughout your hair and may take up to five hours. Once all extensions are installed, the stylist will blend them by cutting them to achieve a natural look. Don’t worry—Great Lengths extensions come with an extra 3 cm of length for this purpose, ensuring you won’t lose any length!

Aftercare Instructions

Since Great Lengths keratin bonds are heat-fused to your hair and act as a permanent part of it, strict aftercare guidelines must be followed:

  • Wash your hair less frequently (only once or twice a week!) to prevent moisture from weakening the bonds.

  • Never go to bed with wet hair.

  • Use a soft, loose ponytail to avoid tangling while sleeping.

  • Brush your hair with the dedicated Great Lengths hairbrush, starting from the ends and working your way up to the roots and bonds.

  • Avoid applying conditioners, oils, or serums directly on the bonds.

  • There is no “refit” for keratin bonds; they must be completely removed, re-tipped, and reinstalled once they grow out.

Product Recommendations

The key to maintaining your great lengths extensions is to ensure you are keeping the extensions soft and silky, this is all going to come form what products you use at home. Our stylist will customise this to you, depending on your hair type.

However we do have a few top hero's that will suit all hair types that we absolutely love!

Jadore by Hadrill Hair x Kaine Vakai

The Jadore x Kaine Vakai collaboration introduces invisible tape hair extensions featuring an innovative 7cm line. These extensions are designed for faster application and optimal comfort, allowing them to lay flat for a flawless appearance.

Installation Process

Just like Great Lengths, our Jadore tape extensions begin with a comprehensive consultation with our stylist. They will assess your natural hair's density, texture, and length to create a personalized installation plan. With up to 22 shades available, the stylist can blend different colors to ensure you achieve your perfect match. During the consultation, you will also receive a cost estimate, and a deposit will be required to secure your upcoming transformation!

On the day of installation, we will start by washing your natural hair with a clarifying shampoo at the basin, followed by completely drying it to establish a solid base. The stylist will then section your hair into small, ultra-fine parts, sandwiching two adhesive wefts approximately 0.5cm from the scalp to allow for natural movement and prevent tension. Before pressing, the section will be combed through to ensure even distribution of your natural hair. The stylist will gently press the tabs together, either using their fingers or a professional pressing tool. Once all rows are applied and aligned flat, the stylist will perform a dry cut to blend the extensions seamlessly into your natural hair. Thanks to the new Kaine 7cm custom tapes, you can enjoy double the results in half the time compared to traditional tapes!

Aftercare Instructions

  • Avoid washing your hair for 48-72 hours after application.

  • Refrain from using any shampoo or conditioner that contains protein, sulfate, keratin, or has high alcohol content.

  • Focus shampoo on your scalp rather than the extensions.

  • Apply conditioner primarily to the extensions.

  • Brush daily using an extension brush.

  • Schedule maintenance every 6-8 weeks to protect your natural hair.

  • Do not sleep with wet hair.

  • Avoid bleaching hair extensions.

  • For the first week after application, wear the extensions in low hairstyles only.

Product recommendation

The Jadore has their own product range that is recommended to use while having the tape wefts in. J’adore comes with a 9 month Wear & Care Guarentee which warrants your extensions if any damage occurs. To have this warranty activate they have a non-negotiable that you must only use the approved Jadore Signature Care Trio products.

To conclude, both keratin and tape extensions offer valuable solutions for individuals seeking to enhance their hair volume and length. Keratin extensions provide a long-lasting option with a natural look, as they are bonded directly to the hair, offering durability and a seamless appearance. However, they require professional application and removal to maintain hair health. On the other hand, tape extensions are a more versatile and temporary option, allowing for easy application and removal, making them suitable for those who prefer frequent changes in their hairstyle. Both methods have their unique advantages and considerations, and the choice between them ultimately depends on personal preferences, lifestyle, and maintenance willingness.
